Cognos 8 on HP-UX 11.11

I have installed cognos 8 on an HP rp4440 with 4 CPUs and 4 GIG RAM. I have been searching for suggested/recommended kernel parameter tuning on the cognos support website, and I am not very successful. Anyone have any tips/experience?

In your situation, I'd call their technical support center. You may find they didn't do thorough testing on HP-UX. If you push hard you may find someone who knows something in there.

push Cognos for more help.

Since you acquired the software from them legally, you can easily get a Web
account at their support site:

For example, depending on which product you use, here are some patch information:

I know of one site that limited maximum of
64 MB of memory per process --. otherwise their data warehousing tool crashed.

HP has assigned a Solution Alliances Engineer to Cognos to ensure smooth support (primarily
for Itanium).

One of large problems has been clean 64-bit applications.

Interestingly enough, I think my ex CIO (we
worked together at a large private health
group in Australia) is now highly-ranked
employee at Cognos :) I lost his details,
pity.

I do have a cognos support contract, and have opened tickets in the past. The problem is that tech support seems to be focused on Windows installations, and Unix is an afterthought. If I push and complain, I can get a Unix person, and then get resolution. I was just checking to see if anyone else had experience with cognos on hp-ux.

Yes, we have, but we are still running Cognos 7 and Reportnet 1.1 and we run a lot of other software on our rp4440 server in parallel with Cognos. So our kernel parameters are probably different and no help to you.

My general expirience : Using oversized kernel parameters increases memory usage only slightly and most of the times has hardly a negative performance impact. Real "tuning" with kernel parameters only is not worth the effort, just make sure they are high enough. If not sure, add 50% more.
Only a very few parameters should not be increased too much (like dbc_max_pct).

Feeling your pain. I took classes with Cognos to get help administering one of their products on Unix and found myself practicing on a windows box.

Very windows centric.

They do have people who know what they are doing on Unix. Or at least they did a few years ago when I worked more heavily with them.
