command to test whether the network i/f works..

Hi
Can anyone let me know what are the list of commands to test the whether the network device works fine or not.. Infact,I need to eliminate the it based on physical layer issue, datalink issue to arrive at the correct problem.
I remember a command like "link****" but i am not sure about it. Pls let me know. Thanx in advance.

I think you are remembering 'linkloop'.

These are few commands,

linkloop, lanscan, lanadmin, ping, ifconfig... etc..

-USA...
