Compiling GNU tar 1.13.19 under hpux 9.07 with HP ansci C

Im trying to compile GNU tar 1.13.19 under hpux 9.07 with HP ansci C. Error on the buffer.c
unit with "line 1152: Ararry size must be
a constant expression.

Has anyone compiled GNU tar 1.13.19 on a 9.x and
help me with this?
