compressed file transfer

Will there be a huge difference when i try to send a compressed file and an uncompressed file (5 times more) which actually goes thru very fast. Dos the network care about the compressed or uncompressed?

Thanks

Re: compressed file transfer

Hi Mike,

I don't think so because we are sending bytes not file type, while ftping ftp knows only the size of the file not the type of files we are sending may be some other issue will be there.

Re: compressed file transfer

Yes the network could care if it is compressed or uncompressed. That depends if your network admins use compression or not ;)

Sometimes it could be beneficial to not compress the file... but it will depend if you calculate the time you use to compress/decompress as well ;)

Be aware that you can also use various algorithms for compressing...
The standard 'compress' command is compressing way less than 'gzip'

If the routers doesn't compress - you can gain higher transfer speed by compressing.
