Hi,
This question is about configuring a non-JDirect printer on HP-UX.
My knowledge on the subject is very limited.
I would like to configure an OKI B6200 printer on HP-UX.
How can I configure it? I have one IP address and a printer name.
Is there any good pointer about printer connectivity concepts?
Im used to execute addqueue to configure HP printers. However, without knowing What Im really doing.
Any pointer, reference, will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Joao Rei

Re: Configure OKI printer in HP-UX
Since you have an IP address that means that the printer is on the network. The "printer name" that you have is taht the hostname or the spooler name in the OKI printserver?
If you can't use Jetadmin, you have to set it up as a remote spooler and you need the ip address (or hostname) and remote spooler name. Use SAM for that.

Solution
Use SAM to configure the printer as mentioned. You need 4 steps:
1. name for the local queue (printer name in HP-UX)
2. IP address for the printer (don't mess with hostnames, DNS, etc)
3. print server internal name for the printer
4. Check the BSD box.
Now it gets tricky. The LAN card runs rfc1179 protocol which means the LAN card is a print server with one or more internal printers. The problem is finding the internal name. Like the vast majority of printer manufacturers, they were designed for PCs and sometimes for Macs. After 20 minutes of searching the OKI website, I could not locate the internal printer name used by OKI LAN cards. You'll have to contact OKI tech support and hopefully they will know what Unix is...
If not, you'll have to use an HP JetDirect adapter box or connect the printer to a PC and set it up using Unix print services.
