Re: configuring external modem on an R-Class 380

Hi,

did you try co?

to add an external modem you need to configure /etc/uucp/Devices and /etc/uucp/Dialers.

Hope this will help,

How to setup a modem using SAM on Kclass computers? DocId: KBRC00004744 Updated: 11/22/00 12:23:00 PM

PROBLEM
How to setup a modem using SAM on Kclass computers?

This procedure describes how to set up a hayes compatible modem
on 9000/800 K-Class computers

RESOLUTION
1] Run SAM

2) From the SAM Menu, select ???Peripheral Devices???

3) From the next SAM Menu, select ???Terminals and Modems???

4) Tab to ???File??? Menu and use the right arrow key to select the ???Actions??? drop
down Menu. Then select ???Add Modem???

5) From the ???Mux/Serial Card??? List, select the Hardware Path or the Description
of one of the following:
A) MUX 3 port (for setting up the Internal Support Modem)
B) MUX (8 ports) (for modems connected to an MDP Mux Panel
port 7 is reserved for the Internal Support Modem or for
the External Modem Port -- which also uses port 7)

NOTE: port 7 cannot be used for both the Internal Modem AND the External Modem
at the same time

6) Tab to the ???Port Number??? label and hit the Enter key. A list of available
ports appears. Select the desired port number.

7) Tab to the ???Speed (Baud Rate)??? label and hit the Enter key. A list of Baud
Rates will be produced.
A) Select a maximum speed of 9600 Baud for use of modems using xon/xoff
(aka: software flow control) protocol.
B) or Select a speed of 19200 Baud for use with the Internal
Support Modem
C) or Select a speed of 19200 which is the maximum baud rate for use of
modems using RTS/CTS (aka: hardware flow control) protocol on a
K-Class computer.

NOTE: Current versions of SAM on 10.XX, and 11.00 do not automatically create
modem device files for RTS/CTS protocol. Such device files will need to be
manually created using the mksf or mknod commands and setting the hardware flow
control bit, (bit five) to the HIGH or ???1??? condition of the minor number for
the port desired. Beginning with HP-UX 11.i or 11.11, SAM will offer RTS/CTS
device file creation as a selected option under the ???Add Modem??? and ???Modify
Modem??? options

8) Tab to ???Use Device for Calling Out??? Use an ???X??? if you desire to allow the
modem to dial out (???X??? selected is the default)

9) Tab to ???Receive In-coming Calls (start getty process)??? Use an ???X??? if you
desire to allow the modem to accept dial in (???X??? selected is the default)

10) Tab to ???CCITT Modem (European standard modems)??? Use an ???X??? if you are in a
European country and CCITT protocol is being used (???X??? is NOT selected as
default)

11) If you have HPUX 11.i or 11.11, tab to ???Use Hardware Flow Control Device
files (RST/CTS protocol)??? Use an ???X??? if you desire to use modems configured
for hardware flow control (???X??? is NOT selected as default)

12) Tab to OK to accept the configuration

13) Sam will create three device files for modem use. You may still need to
physically connect the device and turn it on

14) Exit SAM (use the f8 function key, if you don???t see an Exit selection)

15) Done

ALT KEYWORDS
kclass, k-class, k210, k410, k480, k510, k580, internal modem

If this does not help, pls search technical documents for string 'modem'.

Re: configuring external modem on an R-Class 380

Dear all,

eg, CM>ER or CM>CA etc

Re: configuring external modem on an R-Class 380

Dave,

You need to set the switch on the remote management card to service. Otherwise you don't get the CM>

Re: configuring external modem on an R-Class 380

Please check to make sure that your TERM environment variable is set up properly. The HE command at the CM> prompt will list the available commands for your GSP. Also if your GSP is not in 'service' mode you will not be able to perform a ctrl+b.

Hope this helps,

Re: configuring external modem on an R-Class 380

Patrick,

Thanks a lot, incidentaly this Server is a standard R-class which apprently does not come with a remote mangement card, is there a way of getting to the cm> prompt without installing a remote management card because I am able to do so on a standard D-class D380 which does not have a RMC without a problem?.

Re: configuring external modem on an R-Class 380

Hi Daniel,

The TERM variable is okay since I have compared it with another Server's variable and still [CTRL]+B does not take me to the cm> prompt, thats my problem, please see if you can assist.

Thanks & best regards

Dave,

are you really sure you get the CM> on a D-Class without the RMC? I seriously doubt it

Re: configuring external modem on an R-Class 380

Patrick,

Sorry for that, I hadnt checked my notes properly, yes the D380 comes with an RMC,
but the R-Class does not, does that mean there is no other way of getting to the cm> otherthan using the RMC?.
Please assist.

Re: configuring external modem on an R-Class 380

Dave,
I'm afraid the hardware for the access port (all the CM> stuff) is located on the RMC. That's not that worth if you want to configure a modem, because all modem related configurations that can be made or changed at the CM> prompt are located on the RMC. CA, ER, DR has no effect on normal serial ports (by example on a Mux panel)
The functionalities you are missing is RS or TC to reset the system or force a dump

Re: configuring external modem on an R-Class 380

Hi Patrick,

I do not have a Mux panel, am connecting the US robotics modem directly to the serial port but its not being picked up - it seems there is no communication between the serial port and the Modem, I did the configuration on the Unix side through SAM and looks Okay, please advice

Re: configuring external modem on an R-Class 380

Dave,
I have no experience with US Robotics Modems, but I assume they behave like any other hayes modem???
Is it possible to dial out with the modem without any problem and you can't dial in? In that case I would assume that the "Ring" signal from the modem does not reach the server. Ring indicator is pin 9 of the DBsub 9 connector. Make sure that the ring indicator of the modem (should be pin 22) is connected with this pin

Re: configuring external modem on an R-Class 380

Patrick,

The problem is that the Modem cannot dial-in or dial-out, its simlpy dead, but when I connect it to a Windows PC it works perfectly okay, I have also tried a Hayes and it behaves exactly the same.

Re: configuring external modem on an R-Class 380

Sound's like this is not an easy job.
Can you provide me the product no. or pinout of the cable you use to connect the modem?
Which command do you use for dialout? Does it get you any error message?

Hi Dave ,
have you tried pressing the TOC key at the back of system? If you get to the command mode, try to issue the following commands to unlock the modem port :

Re: configuring external modem on an R-Class 380

Sorry Dave,
I meant the small botton at the back of the box.
If that does not clear your problem ,check your seriel port configurations, these device files should exisit:
/dev/ttyd0p0 for callin modem
/dev/cul0p0 for callout modem
supposing you intend to connect modem at port0
which has instant number 0(use ioscan -Cfn tty).
