Configuring HP APA

Hi Guys, I am a Cisco geek and a nerd with HP Switches. I am to install HP APA and want to know how to verify the APA mode on an HP Switch interface. I am using Procurvr 5308.

Re: Configuring HP APA

Hi,
HP APA uses the following configuration files:
/etc/rc.config.d/hp_apaconf
/etc/rc.config.d/hp_apaportconf
/etc/lanmon/lanconfig.ascii

For configuring HP APA refer following sites:
http://docs.hp.com/en/J4240-90033/ch01s08.html

http://docs.hp.com/en/J4240-90033/ch03s01.html

Re: Configuring HP APA

Thanks. But I am in an urgent situation. Facing downtime. Please just tell me the commands on the switch to change the APA mode on the switch. Say from MANUAL to FEC_AUTO. And maybe the configuration guide for switches. I am bleak with UNIX software.

Re: Configuring HP APA

The _switch_ doesn't have an "APA" mode :)

The aggregation/trunking/bonding mode on the switch will be based on switch commands, and the manual for the ProCurve 5308 is at:

http://www.hp.com/rnd/support/manuals/5300xl.htm

(I got there by starting at http://www.hp.com/go/procurve , then clicking on Products and Solutions and following my nose from there)

I suspect the one you want is down the page a bit and is called "Management and Configuration Guide for the ProCurve Series 6400cl/5300xl/4200vl/3400cl Switches(October 2006)" although you may want to peruse "Advanced Traffic Management Guide for the ProCurve Series 6400cl/5300xl/4200vl/3400cl Switches (October 2006)"

While your Cisco geek heritage likely has you more comfortable with FEC and while APA does indeed (IIRC) still support FEC, I would think that using the de jure industry standard LACP would be a better way to go. The 5308, even with current firmware, probably still supports FEC, but ISTR that some newer switches/firmware _may_ have dropped FEC since LACP has been out for quite a while now.

Re: Configuring HP APA

Thanks for the info. I disabled LACP on the concerned switch interfaces because the UNIX guy complained her could not change the APA mode on his servers. I think after disabling LACP, it defaults to MANUAL. We did that with one of the servers and remote sites could connect to that server (test server). Now, we moved the configs to production servers but remote sites could not access the production servers. Let me explain the scenario I am talking about. We have a DATA Center with UNIX servers and HP switches connecting to two Cisco PIXs and two Cisco 3660 routers configured with HSRP. There are approximately 30 remote sites connecting to these servers for oracle applications. On each site, there is one HP 24xx switch connecting to a Cisco router. I have not disabled LACP on the remote HP switches. When I do a traceroute from the remote servers at the site, they stop just at the Application server in the Data Center. But we carried out tests before doing this on the production network and it worked. I joked around with Speed-Duplex settings on the switches but later on put them on default. Still it failed. What could be the issue?
