I am trying to setup an HP LJ 1022N printer to print from our HP 9000 N4000 class server running HP-UX 11.i
The printer was configured with a hostname and IP address via IE. Apparently HP is going away from JetAdmin..
Anyways, I tried to set it up in SAM like all the other printers I have done in the past. I choose Printer and Plotters, LP Spooler, and then Printers and Plotters again. I then choose Add Remote Printer/plotter from the action menu. I put in the appropriate printer name, remote printer name and remote system name.
Everything looks fine within SAM. When I lpstat that printer name, I get the message "connection to 'printername' is down".
I can ping the ip address of the printer successfully. If I send a job to the printer, the job just sits in the queue and never printes.
I tried adding the printer in SAM as a Network printer, but the diagnostics doesn't even recognize the IP address. I have never had problems setting up other HP printers that use Jet Direct cards. This one is a little different and I can't get it to work. Any suggestions? Thanks...
Dave

Re: configuring remote printer on HP-UX 11.i
I have some Laser Printer (using jetDirect internal and external models) working fine with HP-UX.
The process is the next:
- Download HP Jetdirect Printer Installer for UNIX (HP11e134.SD).
- Install on the HP-UX server using swinstall.
- Assing an IP address to the printer (You allready done).
- Run SAM, Select "Printer and Plotters", "Local Sppoler", "Add Network-Based Printer/Plotter" and fionally "Add printer/Plotter Conenecter to HP JetDirect", this option invoke a script for "JetDirect Printer Installer for UNIX"
- From the MAIN MENU select the Option 1 to add a printer.
Hope to be usefull for you.

Re: configuring remote printer on HP-UX 11.i
The HP website really hides the non-Web-based JetDirect code, both for HP-UX as well as Windows, but they are still there:
HP-UX
10.20: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=18923&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=27350&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=6
11.xx: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?product=58284&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&os=7&softwareitem=ja-6671-1
Windows: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc-JAVA/offweb/vac/us/en/sm/network_software/install_overview.html
Now, the printer needs an IP address, subnet mask and gateway/router before it will work. lp commands are basically useless. Use the hpnpadmin and hppi commands to work with the printer:
/opt/hpnpl/bin/hpnpadmin -v 12.34.56.78
note that hpnpadmin must work before you can add the printer with addqueue.
/opt/hpnpl/bin/addqueue -h 12.34.56.78 -q myprintername
