Configuring Virtual Machine

Hi Gurus,

I have a Blade Server(860C) with four 4GB DIMMS(Total memory=16) and 2 CPU's in Total.

OS Type is HP-UX 11.32

I havent done anything on the server yet.

Now I was asked to Configure 3 VM's of 4GB each.

First I have to Install integrity VM on this Host and make it as a Integrity Host while keeping in mind the memory requirements(I do not know if it is really required while Installing VM s/w)

I have worked on vpar's and npar's but I am new to this concept of Virtulization.

Could you guide me as how to Configure 3 VM's of 4GB each. And then how will I be able to USE all the 3 of them.

Thanks in Advance.

Re: Configuring Virtual Machine

Hi Movam,

11iv3 aka 11.31 is not yet supported to run VSE Virtual Server Environment.

You can either downgrade to 11.23 11iv2 or you will have to wait for the next release of VSE 4.0 (september 2008).

Best regards,
Robert-Jan

Re: Configuring Virtual Machine

Hi Robert,

I have seen in the below doc as

http://docs.hp.com/en/T2767-90105/T2767-90105.pdf

HP-UX 11i v2 December 2007 (0712) or later, running on an Integrity server, as well as
any appropriate software patches (see the HP Integrity Virtual Machines Release Notes).
The license for Integrity VM includes the license for running the HP-UX Foundation
Operating Environment on the VM Host system.

So is it like On my blade running with HP-UX 11i V3[HP-UX 11i v3 BOE Media] I cannot Install HP-UX Integrity Virtual Machines PCl.

Am I correct in my understanding.

Re: Configuring Virtual Machine

If this is true then which version of Integrity VM will be supported on HP-UX11i V3.

But again there is another doc. which says this On Page 51:

http://docs.hp.com/en/T2767-90105/T2767-90105.pdf

Installing the HP-UX Guest Operating System
You can install following versions of HP-UX on a virtual machine:
â ¢ HP-UX 11i V2 May 2005 or later
â ¢ HP-UX 11i V3

I am confused.

Re: Configuring Virtual Machine

So Now As I understand....

VM Host should & must be 11.23

and the Guest OS can be [11.31 or 11.23]

Am I correct

Re: Configuring Virtual Machine

Currently your Host must run HP-UX 11iv2, but it can run a Virtual Machine that has a Guest OS running that can be HP-UX 11iv3
Support for 11iv3 as a Host OS will be next month, using the September 09 release of HP-UX 11iv3 and Integrity VM version A.04

Re: Configuring Virtual Machine

Wonderful Melvyn... That removes my confusition!!!

Now comming back to my actual query....

I have a Blade Server(860C) with four 4GB DIMMS(Total memory=16) and 2 CPU's in Total.

Host OS=11.23 & Guest OS=11.31

I havent done anything on the server yet.

Re: Configuring Virtual Machine

First, read the manual:
http://docs.hp.com/en/T2767-90105/T2767-90105.pdf (assuming you are installing version 3.5)
This will guide you throuh the steps.
To answer the memory question, you need to look at the following:
Sufficient physical memory (RAM), including the following:
750 MB + 7.5% of memory beyond the first GB (that is, 7.5% of (total physical memory
- 1 GB))
Total aggregate memory required for each guest (operating system and application
requirements)HP-UX 11i v2 May 2005 requires a minimum of 1 GB of memory, so a guest running HP-UX must be configured with at least that much memory.
Additional 7% of aggregate guest memory for overhead for guests less than or equal
to 4 GB and between 7% and 7.3% for guests larger than 4 GB.
For example, for a VM Host with 16 GB of memory and three VMs configured with 4 GB
of memory each, the memory requirements would be calculated as follows:
1.86 GB for the VM Host (750 MB plus 7.5% of 15 GB)
12.84 GB total guest requirement (107% of 12 GB)
Total requirements = 14.8 GB of memory

Re: Configuring Virtual Machine

as to how to confiugure the actual virtual Machines, read chapter 3 of http://docs.hp.com/en/T2767-90105/T2767-90105.pdf
And then depending upon which OS you wish to install as the guest OS, read the relevant section for that Guest in the same manual

Re: Configuring Virtual Machine

Wonderful.. I am all ready ... set to go to the lab..

Just One last Query before I hit the lab... I wouldn't take much of your time now...

Am I correct in the following command:-

hpvmcreate -P myvm01 -O HP-UX -c 2 -r 4G
hpvmcreate -P myvm02 -O HP-UX -c 2 -r 4G
hpvmcreate -P myvm03 -O HP-UX -c 2 -r 4G

myvm01---> VM Name

Is it Ok to give 2 cpu's though I have only 2 on the Server Physically or should I need to change it.

I am little hesitant about the CPU entitlement. How much % would be a better option to give.I am not really sure.

And after completing the configuration on my VM can I use hpvmmodify to allocate Memeory Dynamically as I havent done it before.

Re: Configuring Virtual Machine

The CPUs in an IVM are virtual. Each Vguest can have up to 4.

If you were to entitle each one at 100% then you could only assign a total of two.

Set the entitlement to 5%. In theory with two physical CPUs you could create 40 single Vcpu Vguests. ( 'cept you do not have enough ram for that ). The entitlement is there to guarentee a Vguest a certain % of a physical CPU.

BTW, While you are here. Assign some points to those that have offered their time and experience. Simply use the pull down next to each respondant, pick a number, click submit.

Re: Configuring Virtual Machine

the -c 2 means you are giving 2 virtual cpu's to each machine.
Using a 5% entitlement per cpu, you COULD have 20vCPU's per physical CPU, although this is not recoemmended.
The default entitlement unless you specify in the create command is 10%

The general recommendation is to create using a single vCPU, then add vCPU's once the OS is installed IF you need them.
