Containers and HP-UX

Containers and HP-UX

There appears to be hidden filesystem markers for container filesystems. Running Ignite to backup everything in vg00 (that includes /var/hpsrp directrories) fails. If a container has a mounted filesystem, flist fails. Stopping the container doesn't help (which needs to run 24x7 anyway) and when we can actually complete the backup, the container filesystems are empty.

I haven't seen any notes about Ignite and containers. Our containers are are all in vg00.
Do we have to run a separate backup program for /var/hpsrp?
Will pax or fbackup backup these special filesystems?

Re: Query: Containers and HP-UX

The document you referenced does not have the word ignite anywhere.

In fact, the word backup doesn't appear in this document at all.

Re: Containers and HP-UX

Hello pooderbill,

Generally there is no such restriction in performing ignite backup in GV (Global View).
There is only one limitation - creation of golden image from Global view is not supported when containers configured .
What kind of container do you have ?
Do you have seperate filesystem for these containers or they are on /var filesystem ?

Re: Containers and HP-UX

@georgek_1

I don't know what a GV (Global View) might be. Is that some special backup program?

My 4 containers are standard and located under /var/hpsrp.
They are not on a separate VG.

The problem is that /var/hpsrp container directories are stored as empty directories. Or, when there are locally mounted filesystems or manager mounted, the list_expander fails without explanation.

If a mountpoint for a container is mounted from the container mangers /etc/fstab or the /var/hparp/ABC.setup/fstab files, then make_net_recovery fails.

However, if the lvol is added to the container via тАШsrp -add ABC -tune device=/dev/vgsrp/*ABCfs1тАЩ and then added to the containers fstab file (/var/hpsrp/ABC/etc/fstab) and mounted when the container starts, then Ignite backup (list_expander) works fine.

So, there is something with the way HP9000 containers and Ignite work (or donтАЩt work) together that is causing this issue.

Also, If a container is running when a make_net_recovery if run, that filesystem will NOT get backed up.

Re: Containers and HP-UX

Hello pooderbill,

Global View is nothing but the server where the containers are configured and running .
I assume you are using the option -x inc_entire=vg00 while taking the backup ? Any errors with list_expander ?.
Hope you are using the latest version of Ignite. if not, sugegst you to update Igntie and see if that helps

This issue requires in-depth analysis of Ignite/SRP logs , and I would suggest you to log a case with HPE Support Center.
