Continued need for older archives

Shalom Lachem, Shalom to all.

This morning a customer site required Curl 7.13

The reasoning was sound, we had to mirror the customer site and they used Curl 7.13.

Except, they didn't have the depot. We didn't have the depot. hpconnect didn't have the depot.

Maybe our office in the UK had the depot, but HP couldn't provide it.

For various business reasons people need depots that are no longer provided by HP.

I may be willing to provide a website for this.

I'm not willing to build said website however.

Here is what is needed.

1) Written permission from HP to post the software.
2) A download form absolving me or HP of any liability. I'll get a lawyer to write the language.
3) Someone to build a simple search and download application for hpux.ws

I don't know. Is it a waste of time? Is someone willing to build it? Is HP willing to grand permission to post copies of its software?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Hi SEP,

Perhaps Internet Express team may provide you with Curl 7.13 from their archives. Just you need to contact HP-Support or iexpress@cup.hp.com or if i remember correctly.

Re: Continued need for older archives

Sounds like a simple enough task, provided the amount of software isn't huge.

I've written plenty of websites that allow visitors to download Word documents or PDFs, so I can't see that this would be significantly different.

If there's enough interest I'll give you my email address so we can discuss the details. Naturally enough, I would want to be absolved of any liability as well.

Just in case my employers read this - I would do it in my own time.

Re: Continued need for older archives

I'm wondering if I have the band width to support this.

I've got an NFS cluster with the disk space, but band width is still a concern.

Re: Continued need for older archives

No problem for me to host it in my cradle of worthfull oldies :)

Is it available on an Application CD? Which one.
You didn't mention an OS version.

I don't think that making the old(er) depots available is jurisdictially wrong, as you would need a codeword anyway for the payed stuff.

I could build a curl depot from scratch if needed. curl is open source

Re: Continued need for older archives

Thanks Merijn,

The customer in this case requires a depot.

We found the thing sitting in the UK (internal network) but it just seems to me, time and time again that for very valid reasons software is needed and isn't available.

There has to be answer.

I think before anyone posts anything from an Application CD they might want to review their support agreement. This is what has caused me to never provide a depot from my copious supply of old Application CD's.

Re: Continued need for older archives

If HP has stopped active support for 11.00 and older, where do people get their software from otherwise?
If you look at the download statistics of my site, you would see that there still is a huge demand for software on 10.20. And if 10.20 is still actively *used*, you can imagine how many 11.00 boxes are still up and running purring away making their users very happy.

IMHO HP should be gratefull to people like us. They should start actively supporting *us*

Anyway, I see no problem in building my own depots from scratch, converting them to a depot, and making it available. It's all open source.
You're right though that posting old(er) depots from the Application CD's is a different story to which I would like an official statement from HP too

Re: Continued need for older archives

SEP, I hope I have put the wheels in motion.
I have asked HP internals to officially give a reaction to our quest either by private mail to us or in this thread.

As I amprobably the last and only person in the world to actively support recent Open Source on HP-UX 10.20 (I managed to build gdb-6.5, which will be included in the next gcc depot), I just hope they will (actively) support my (and all others that do this for free) activities

Re: Continued need for older archives

What ever happened with this initiative? Is there a repository of depot files for HP-UX 11.00 and earlier?
