Coppying the passwd file and groups
I have 2 HP servers with 11.0 old and 11.11 new. I need to copy the users from old to new. The old is marked trusted. The new server.
my problem the new came with installed users(system) and I need to keep them as they are but some have UIDs similar to the ones on the old server but diffent user names. So if I copy from old to new I will overight some of the users on the new server which I do not want to do. How can I do it

Re: Coppying the passwd file and groups
Shalom Machaya,
You have a few problems.
The old trusted system has user password data in a number of small files in the /tcb folder of the root filesystem.
Copy those users is extremely tedious. You could however convert the system to non-trusted mode and then copy the portions of the /etc/passwd and /etc/group files you need.
Now you have conflict between the numeric user ids on the two systems. Those conflicts will have to be resolved manually by you.
You will have to assign new numeric user id's in /etc/passwd and change the ownerhip of the changed user files wherever their data may lay.
In short there is no easy solution, this involves a lot of systems administrator work.
