Tar and cpio use the file system structure to move data around so that's 2 or 3 levels above any HW issues.
GNU tar is out there. Its used by Veritas Netbackup and exceeds the 2 gb ceiling imposed on the basic versions installed in HP-UX.

DDS4 = 40 gb
DDS3 = 24 gb
