What precisely do you mean by "incompatibility"?
My house is the bank's, my money the wife's, But my opinions belong to me, not HP!

Re: CPIO TAR ITANIUM

Need a little more information. Are you seeing error messages for instance?

Tar and cpio use the file system structure to move data around so that's 2 or 3 levels above any HW issues.

GNU tar is out there. Its used by Veritas Netbackup and exceeds the 2 gb ceiling imposed on the basic versions installed in HP-UX.

Re: CPIO TAR ITANIUM

I created a tar and cpio DDS4 tape on an Itanium server with HPUX 11i, and I tried to restore it on an PA-RISC with a DDS4 and it didn't work.
I the direction PA-RISC => Itanium it didn't work also

Re: CPIO TAR ITANIUM

OK. It didn't work. What kind of error(s) did you get? How exactly didn't it work? What commands did you use?

You haven't exactly given us a lot to go on yet. More information is required!

Re: CPIO TAR ITANIUM

More than likely there's a DDS4 backward compatability problem going down to DDS3, or a tape size issue that is too big for the DDS3.

DDS4 = 40 gb
DDS3 = 24 gb

If you refer to this link I think you'll find that this is a backward compatibility problem:

Re: CPIO TAR ITANIUM

The problem is solved with a new DDS4 tape.

It's time to replace al my tapes....
