Crash dumps Causing a reboot

Hello:

I have a C3700 running 11i that is sporadically rebooting and I am thinking it is caused by a HPUX panic crash dumps. I am not sure how to prove or troubleshoot what could be causing these reboots. Do you have any suggestions? I have validated that the system has all of the lastest patches.

Re: Crash dumps Causing a reboot

A crash dump does not cause a reboot. Rather, a system PANIC (for whatever reason) will result in a crash dump being written to /var/adm/crash.

To see what is happening have a look at /etc/shutdownlog. That will list reasons for shutdowns / reboots. If the system crashed because of a panic, then that will be listed.

If you have a crash dump in /var/adm/crash, and if you have a support contract on this machine, you can send the dump to HP for analysis. They ware able to analyze the dump and tell you what caused the system to reboot / panic.

Shalom Scott,

Crash dump was created because the system went down.

It's worth doing Q4 analsysis on the dump and sending the results off to HP. They often find needed patches that are not three star, but have to be installed anyway to deal with the issue at hand.
