Create volume with SAM hangs

Hi,

I was trying to create a volume group using SAM. It seems that the files are all in place but still Sam hangs.

I had to kill the SAM session to get back in.
Sam will not scan devices successully now.

I've installed patch 23876 and even rebooted the system. Sam works fine for other functions.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Create volume with SAM hangs

WHat does the sam log show? Can you do a vgdisplay -v without any errors? Or a lvdisplay -v on your new lv's?

Re: Create volume with SAM hangs

Hi Josee,

I've had SAM seem to hang indefinitely on VG creation due to a bad or misconfigured disk. In one instance, my CE duplicated SCSI id's. When SAM tried to stroke the bus via ioscan to get a SCSI describe of each device, it just kinda went out into la la land. In another instance, one of the disks I was trying to rope into a new VG was genuinely bad. Again, it hung for a very long time but eventually came back with complaints of the disk in question.

Cheers,

Re: Create volume with SAM hangs

I've seen SAM having trouble with LVM disks when there are multiple H/W paths involved. Have not found the root cause. We simply avoid using SAM when it comes to LVM.

Re: Create volume with SAM hangs

Hi Josee:

Try a command line 'ioscan' to verify that it works. Depending on the number of devices on your system, etc. this may take a minute, so be patient.

# ioscan -fnC disk|more

Re: Create volume with SAM hangs

hi,

Vgcreation is not a scary thing; You can do it manually
with better control than doing it through SAM.

Identify what disks you need
to create the VG.
-ioscan -nkfCdisk

Do a diskinfo on the identified disks to confirm the size of it.

Do a pvcreate on the disks to prepare it for the VG.

Next, create the vgdirectory
/dev/vgname

create the vg control file
mknod /dev/vgname/group c 64 0x??0000

Finally create the VG,
vgcreate /dev/vgname /dev/dsk/diskname
(you can look up man vgcreate for options).

To confirm the creation do
vgdisplay -v vgname

Re: Create volume with SAM hangs

Hi Josee,

Make sure you have the latest SAM and LVM patches on the system. Do a search with keyword SAM and lvm in the patches section of ITRC home page.

hope this helps.

Re: Create volume with SAM hangs

Hi,

These are the up to date patches for
LVM, SCSI and FC.

PHCO_24437
PHKL_24268
PHKL_23939
PHKL_24004

Also look at their dependancies. I would hazard a guess that there is something wrong when SAM tries to interact with LVM.

SAM will try to do an 'ioscan' itself, and
depending on your hardware can take up to 5
minutes or more, especially if you have fibre
channel SAN's.
