create Vpars

Hi All,

We have RP7420 Machine OS HPUX 11.11 with Current configuration:

•One hard partition (nPar0) with 16CPU’s, 64GB memory, 16 I/O’s

We need to Change configuration as:

•Create two Virtual partitions
•vPar0 with 12 CPUs 48GB memory 12 I/O slots(For production server)
•Vpar1 with 4 CPU’s 16GB memory 4 I/O slots(For test server)

Now machine is in production and we don't want to loose current OS, please guide what steps we follow to do this activity.

Best Regards,
Modi

Re: create Vpars

Check this documentation

http://docs.hp.com/en/oshpux11i.html#Virtual%20Partitions

and refer to version A.03.03.
You will find a step-by-step instruction there.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: create Vpars

As already stated, read the manuals, it is explained in there, but to possibly reassutre you the steps include installing the Vpar software on your exisiting root disk, creating the first vpar to INCLUDE the current boot disk and then rebooting into a vpar using the exisiting boot disk.
Hence nothing is lost from your current OS.

Re: create Vpars

Hi Modi,

it's better for you to check the examples of creating the vpars on the url below :

http://docs.hp.com/en/7042/T1335-90041.pdf

Chapter 3 - Planning Your System for Virtual Partitions

And the first rule before you do it on your production system is backup.

Hope this information can help you.

Re: create Vpars

I agree with melvin, but you must decide how to configure the second partition? Golden image or you install using npar installation?

the advantage if using golden image is you no need downtime for vpar0, but more difficult to configure golden image

using npar installation is a simple way, you just boot to cd rom ad install to vpar1's disk.

thanks

Re: create Vpars

Hi Modi,

1.Take Full backup of O/S and data
2.Install vPar software on your production server
3. Shutdown Production O/S
4. Install HPUX 11.11 on separate Hard disk
5. Boot from that HDD and install vPar software
6. Shutdown O/S and boot production server
7. Create Vpar 0 and assign 12CPUâ s , 48GB memory and 8 I/O slots
8. Create Vpar 1 and assign 04CPUâ s , 16GB memory and 8 I/O slots
9. Reboot OS and boot both vPar from VPMON

as recommened by Torsten Check this documentation
