Creating MVS tape

I am having a problem creating tapes that can be read on a MVS or AS/400 system. What I have tried is:
1) dd of=/dev/rmt/1mn if=header obs=6160 cbs=80 conv=ebcdic
(I do this to create a label)
2) dd of=/dev/rmt/1mn if=INFILENAME obs=6160 cbs=80 conv=ebcdic
(This is the data itself)
3) dd of=/dev/rmt/1mn if=trailer obs=6160 cbs=80 conv=ebcdic
(This creates the EOF marker)

Attached is a file containing both the header & trailer file information.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Brian

Re: Creating MVS tape

Hi brian,
are you talking on big reel tapes?
What errors are you getting at reading on MVS?
I know these machines like defined label (ANSI?) Im trying to ftp to MVS to generate on the MVS a 3480 cartridge, since I have no more tape connected to an HP... I found out MVS is sensible to fixed/variable block size also, never noticed all this when I used to generate tapes...
But there is a thing that comes to my mind, some time ago I was asked to transfer a file from aix to BULL-GCOS (...) I had to use conv=unblock
If you cant find whats wrong try to put the file on MVS by ftp, if there is something wrong with the record size etc. it will say so..
e.g.
once ftped on you MVS:
ftp > quote site RECFM=FB LREC=80
> put yourfile
> quote site LRECL=700
> put yourseconfile-BS=700
...
If it works without errors, I would copy it to tape and read the tape on the HP and see what I find...

Again just thoughts
Good luck
Ah, I have a binary to convert (Im looking for the source but cannot find it) if you wish I can try to send it to you (We use it to convert files to send via ftp to the main Post for billing...)

Best regards

Re: Creating MVS tape

I am talking about creating the 9-track reel tapes on HP to be loaded onto MVS.
Unfortunately, I do not have the errors they are getting on the MVS side. All they tell me is: "I couldn't read the tape."
I have had some tapes returned to me and I was able to read them cleanly.

I am unable to FTP the files in question because the TelCo's require reel tapes and usually I do not have any direct access to these machines.

Victor: I was unable to access the attached file.

Re: Creating MVS tape

Brian.
Would you like me to send you the binary by email? I would need your email for that...
I know that the tool is used to generate the records for mvs, because we have to send a header BS=80 then the data,BS=700 and finally a End with bs=80 again, I dont know if it converts to ebcdic at the same time (I cant remember but I will try the tool now...) its called IFuxcnv =>
./IFuxcnv
Usage : ./IFuxcnv recordLength

Re: Creating MVS tape

Me again,
It doesnt convert to ebcdic (anyway MVS understands ascii...) but the syntax of the toll is not obvious, so here you are
