cron issue with HP-UX 11.11

Hi

I am using a L3000 server with HP-UX 11.11 and my performance goes down (cpu-bound) when cron is processing some shell scripts. I think these scripts are used by CRON to parse cron entries internally. I am interested in knowing some info about fine-tuning these scripts. Is there any specific patch needed to be applied.

Also I welcome your ideas to do more on this

Thanks
Vijay

Can you post your scripts as well a crontab -l and some specifics on your system - cpu speed, ram, model, backup schedules...etc...

Re: cron issue with HP-UX 11.11

Which users cron entries are causing the problem?

Post crontab -l "user_name"

Re: cron issue with HP-UX 11.11

latest patch for cron is PHCO_26562,
do you have it ?

But i do not think that it is a cron issue, rather than what the script really do.

What do they do ?

Re: cron issue with HP-UX 11.11

The issue lies in the scripts.

My cron jobs that run at night are actually a series of find jobs that clean up files older than a certain date in temp directories.

Once during overnight maintenance, I monitored performance on a D380/2 system. The load factor on the box jumped well over 20 and stayed that way while the jobs were running.

This was a signal to me to space out those find jobs so they would not run against one and other.

Just a tip.

Re: cron issue with HP-UX 11.11

to test cron as a culprit, you could try running the same scrips (if possible) while running some sar tests > history file.

then try scheduling some simple scripts through cron, and from command line, to see if there is a difference showing up in sar.

also, man sa1 to get sar monitoring and history. It's great to have whenever you need to begin detective work.
