Cross Platform NIS?

Hi folks:

Will a HP-UX 'NIS' server work with Solaris and/or AIX and/or LINUX 'NIS' clients?

Is there a cross platform UNIX utility outthere if not 'NIS'? RDIST?

Re: Cross Platform NIS?

Yes, NIS should work across platforms as long as you stay with the basic NIS maps.

I have worked in an environment with Sun and HP and the only problem we had was when we implemented a NIS map that Sun supported but HP did not.

Re: Cross Platform NIS?

My best answer is "I think so". I have definitely used an HPUX NIS server with AIX and Sun Clients (as well as DEC, SGI, and UnixWare). Linux should work as a client but I would avoid it as a server (slave or master).
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Cross Platform NIS?

Never had a problem, except for when management thought it would be better to have Linux as a NIS master. Solaris didn't like it, so we scrapped that plan and used a Solaris 8 box the master. Linux clients had no problem.

I have used Sun master, and HPUX slaves with no problem.
