Re: D370 always pinging PC

There are no viruses as such on hpux. Systems can be compromised by things called trojan horses. You could possibly have a script that runs from cron that does this. If these are not productions systems you could disable cron temporarily to see if the practise continues. (if that's where the jobs start from)
Anyone for a Mutiny ?

Re: D370 always pinging PC

to Michael Tully
if it has something with "trojan horses" which use cron to send ping-packet
can i execute #crontab -l
to list the script?

Re: D370 always pinging PC

The default configuration of HP-UX 11.00 and earlier is to maintain network connectivity with an occaisional ping.

This can be turned off with the ndd command.

Its not a virus. Its a feature. This feature is turned off by default in 11.11.

Do you want a procedure for turning it off? There may be one deep in my bag of tricks.

to Steven E Protter
if it is as you said
this phenomenon should happen when my systems are setup!
but it happens only these days !

Re: D370 always pinging PC

HP-UX tries to ping its routers, to make sure they still are valid. Could it be that your routing table has been changed recently?

Re: D370 always pinging PC

Apart from what is already mentioned it could ba a user running a script. Have you tried to grep for ping in the process table (ps -ef | grep ping)?
