D380 Hard Drive

My D380 has 3 internal disks. One's bad. I pulled it and it is a Hewlett Packard ST39175LC. Looking that up it turns out it's a Seagate ST39175LC. Question: Will a regular ol' Seagate work as a replacement or do I need the "HP" version? The cost difference is $95 for a Seagate and about $700 for the HP, so you see my issue.

Re: D380 Hard Drive

Hi Stuart,

Depends on whether it will be data or root/boot.
If it'll be data, it should work.
If it will be root/boot you need the HP for the HP firmware.

Jeff

Re: D380 Hard Drive

Note that this is a LVD SCSI drive but the D-380 uses a HVD (High Voltage Differential) internal bus. These are not compatible! Inside each of the disk modules is an LVD/HVD translator board. As long as the translator board is okay then you can replace the drives BUT the firmware will not be correct. As long as this disk is not a boot disk then you will probably be okay although STM will not be very happy with this drive.

I would look out on the HP used-equipment market. These drives are rather cheap there.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: D380 Hard Drive

With the part number you can find that drive for between $200-$300 from many remarketing dealers.

In the end, I think you'll be better off with the HP version because if something goes wrong hardware wise, the first thing I'd suspect is the firmware isn't right.

I've been getting parts like this from a number of resellers and can give you some websites. Also a google search on the part number itself will turn up a number of vendors that will sell it to you at a good price.

Two links and my search:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=ST39175LC&btnG=Google+Search

I don't need points for this. I'm just kind of anal and who knows, you may need to boot of this thing some day.
