Data Protector - performances problem

Hi all,

our backup server was recently upgraded from Omniback to Data Protector 5.0. We have tried to perform a filesystem backup from the Data Protector server (HPUX11.00) over FO cable to a Ultrium tape library. Between the server and the library there is a Brocade SilkWorm2800 which had some problems on the GBIC to the library - I have changed the FO cable so Data Link Failure on the port's log is 0 now. I have attached the backup log- you can see that the backup speed is not so big taking into acount that it's about fiber optic. Can you tell me some possible reasons for that (I have seen on the server using top that the xomni occupies about 85 - 90% CPU during the backup)?

Thanks in advance,
ionu

Re: Data Protector - performances problem

This may be in the wrong forum, but I'll take a shot at it.

Isn't xomni just the java-based X windows client? It may be taking up a bunch of CPU while it's monitoring the backup job. Try getting out of the client (run from X windows on the server) and see what happens.

Good luck!

Re: Data Protector - performances problem

The general rules for OB2/DP are 1) Look for and install the latest cumulative patches - new OB2 releases typically have problems. 2) Look for and install JFS (VxFS), Network, IO, and LVM patches.

Finally (and you are not going to like this) stop using the UNIX version of the GUI and use the Windows GUI to manage your HP-UX Cell Manager. The UNIX version is terrible, slow, crippled, and not completely stable.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Data Protector - performances problem

Thank you for help. I'm running xomni only on the server, maybe there is a patch problem, I have first to evaluate this issue.

Thank you both!

In case you can't find it, here is a link to the data protector patch page.

Re: Data Protector - performances problem

Hi,
This backup is too small to give a reliable performance result with Ultrium drives.
