date does not stick upon a reboot

I have a workstation and using the date command works but not upon a reboot.

#date
Sun May 4 04:46:52 BST 2003

What's happening?
Is there a dst kernel parmameter? If yes I don't have it.

Re: date does not stick upon a reboot

Hi,

No kernel parameter. Take a look at /etc/TIMEZONE and see what it is set for. You can do 'set_parms timezone' to set the correct time zone for your machine.

If the date/time still keeps getting wrong and you have the correct time zone, it could be a problem with the hardware clock, which is when it is time to call HP.

If your network has a time server, you can configure your machine to use it.

/etc/ntp.conf

Needs the ip addy of the timer server.

/sbin/init.d/xntpd start

The prior TZ post is however a more likely solution.

Re: date does not stick upon a reboot

On a computer, time is always a tricky issue. A $5 watch from Radio Shack is likely to keep better time than a $100,000 computer from HP (or anyone else, for that matter).

This is why there is so much time and attention paid to ntp (network time protocol). Once you've got the timezone set, you really need to get an external source of network time in order to keep the clocks in sync. You can use SAM to get ntp up and running.

If you don't have a network attached to your system, keeping the clock accurate is somewhere between very difficult and impossible.

Re: date does not stick upon a reboot

fair play regarding the time sync issues.

but we're not talking about 2 mins or 60mins, we're talking about days.

as John mentioned could be a problem with the hardware clock...

Re: date does not stick upon a reboot

Time is kept on the system board with a battery so replace the battery first but bear in mind that the system board may also have to go.

What model work station do you have? Battery's can also be located on the system board.

But if it is always *late*, but *not* a few (<24) *exact* hours late, then it is the battery which has been mentioned
