dd read error: I/O error

Guys,

When I perform the following command:

dd if=/dev/rdsk/c0t6d0 of=/dev/null bs=1024

I get the following output:

dd read error: I/O error
6930+0 records in
6930+0 records out

What could be the problem and how would I resolve this.

Thanks in advance

Re: dd read error: I/O error

The I/O error indicates a HW problem. Have someone examine the disk for problems.

Re: dd read error: I/O error

Hi,

Looks like a hardware problem. Replacing the disk would be the best option.

Hope this helps.

The disk is bad or corrupt.
it is time to replace it.

Re: dd read error: I/O error

Hi,

Check the disk is claimed in an ioscan.
Check syslog.log for any error messages.

It does look as though you have a faulty disk.

Re: dd read error: I/O error

Try using mediainit on your disk to low level format it in an attempt to fix the bad block;

mediainit -v /dev/rdsk/c0t6d0

This is a DESTRUCTIVE disk so the disk cant be in use at the time - remove it from any volume group. If it succeeds then your disk is aok - pvcreate -f it and add it back into a VG and reuse. If mediainit fails your disk is dead and must be replaced.

Re: dd read error: I/O error

Is the disk available in LVM ?

We have had problems in the past, where the disk is calimed in an ioscan, but unavailable in LVM.
In this instance we replace the disk & re-sync the mirrors.

Re: dd read error: I/O error

I cannot use mediainit because the disk is a root disk and there is no mirroring. However what i have is a ignite tape which i created yesterday, thus what i will do is try and have the disk replaced and then boot from ignite. In addition at the moment the disk is claimed and i have all the logical volumes available.

Thanks guys! i have had great response....! :)
