I has a case in which I have to give out a solution to backup data from HDD to DDS3 tape.
I have a file system with 3GB and want to do a full backup to DDS3 tape (12GB) weekly, but I also want to do a full backup of this file system of other weeks to this tape to save the tape quantity so that I can take approximately 4 times full backup in one tape (4x3GB=12GB) and of course, the data of a week does not overwrite the one of other weeks .
Could anyone introduce backup mechanisms to meet this requirement. As I dimly know, vxdump can do this situation so someone can introduce more detail or have scripts to help me this case.
Highly appriciate your help.

Re: DDS3 backup solution
mt -f /dev/rmt/0mn fsf 1

Re: DDS3 backup solution
Appending backups to a media without using a "real" backup software is very tricky. If you don't want to spend mony on e.g. Data Protector Single server edition I belive it is better to use one media per backup.

Re: DDS3 backup solution
I think Sunnil's advice is highly feasible. It means that I have to do some commands like:
At the first time:
mt -t /dev/rmt/0mn fsf 1
vxdump -0[options] /dev/rmt/0mn /filesytem
At the second time:
mt -t /dev/rmt/0mn fsf 2
vxdump -0[options] /dev/rmt/0mn /filesytem
and so on.
Do you think it 's correct?
