Default route settings for stand alone network
My network is isolated from the outside world. Until recently I had connectivity via an ISDN router - this connection has now been removed (192.37.248.194) and on one of my 11.31 machines my routing table looks like...
Routing tables
Destination Gateway Flags Refs Interface Pmtu
127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1 UH 0 lo0 32808
192.37.248.164 192.37.248.164 UH 0 lan0 32808
192.37.248.0 192.37.248.164 U 2 lan0 1500
127.0.0.0 127.0.0.1 U 0 lo0 32808
default 192.37.248.194 UG 0 lan0 1500
(netstat -rn).
I'm getting lot's of the following message in syslog...
Jul 9 08:01:25 dimsvr vmunix: Dead gateway detection can't ping the last remaining default gateway at 0xc025f8c2 .See ndd -h ip_ire_gw_probe for more info
(But interestingly enough not on my other machines which also have 192.37.248.194 defined as the default route - they did report the 'dead gateway' message but then stopped doing so without any intervention. dimsvr persists in reporting the error.
What I'd like to do is remove the 192.37.248.194 routes, but my question is do I have to have a default route defined, even if I have no connections to the outside world? The only network traffic should be on 192.37.248.0-255.
Many thanks,
Gary

Re: Default route settings for stand alone network
No you do not have to have a default route defined.
You can remove a route via the 'route delete' command. To delete your default route, I believe the syntax is:
route delete default 192.37.248.194
You also need to make sure you remove the route information from your /etc/rc.config.d/netconf file so the route will not get added automatically when the server reboots.

Re: Default route settings for stand alone network
Thanks for the response Patrick.
I've now deleted the default route - hopefully the syslog messages will now stop.
Best regards,
Gary
