Diferent hardware to recover ignite

Hi,

Does any one know if I can restore a ignite backup taken from a C3600 in a L3000.
Even if there is some after work to be done it would save me a lot of trouble.

Thanks,
Walter

Re: Diferent hardware to recover ignite

Earlier it was not possible to clone systems of different hardware model using IGNITE.

Latest versions of IGNITE have some extra features where that was made possible.

man page of make_tape_recovery
/*
Using the Recovery Tape to Clone a System
When creating a recovery tape for the purpose of cloning one system to
another, it is best to run make_tape_recovery using the -i option.
This will allow you to interact with the installation and make any
changes necessary (such as changing which disks to use, hostname and
IP address). If you do not use the -i option to create the tape, you
will be given 10 seconds when using the recovery tape to stop the
automatic installation. The procedure below describes this situation.

When cloning systems, it is very important to change the networking
information to avoid IP-address conflicts between the original system
and the new system. You must interact with the installation to make
these changes.

Using a recovery tape to clone systems will only work if the two
systems are capable of running the same software configuration. This
means that the source system must contain a version of HP-UX with all
necessary patches and driver software required by the clone system.

If the two systems are different hardware models, a new kernel will
automatically be built to suit the new hardware. If the two systems
are the same model, the clone will by default use the kernel from the
original system. You may force a kernel to be built by using the
"Additional" screen in the Advanced user interface to set the "Cloning
to different HW?" selector to TRUE.

Re: Diferent hardware to recover ignite

I've cloned dozens of HP servers and there are always problems. First, I don't believe the above posting about cloning from different hardware classes; it???s never worked and will become an even bigger problem with Itanium CPUs. In short, go PA-RISC CPUs to PA-RISC CPUs and never PA-RISC to Itanium and ALWAYS STAY WITHIN THE SERVER CLASS. Second, it is often necessary for one reason or another to remove all peripheral devices including plug-in LAN cards, etc., in order to clone. This involves powering off and removing or unplugging everything leaving a server without any attachments whatsoever! For example, on an N4000 using a quad port LAN card this was necessary. Also ignore the comment about a make_recovery tape with the "...-i..." option, just interrupt the ignite install by pressing the space bar.

Re: Diferent hardware to recover ignite

Cloning different h/w is a bad idea even after removing the uncommon drivers from kernel.

Becasue you will need to load other drivers and softwares after the reocovery (example various lan cards,FC, special OLAR support, and many other related libraries and 100s of required/recommended patches). And doing this will take extreamly high effort and time.

Seeing this I would highly recommend to load fresh HPUX in this case after you load fresh OS and make all components work on the system, taka a make_recovery (you can consider this golden for that class) and then you can use this one for same class of hardware.

hope this helps...

Re: Diferent hardware to recover ignite

Those two machines are way too different to clone without headaches.

The latest and gretest Ignite for 11.11(11i) does have provisions in it to clone to differing hardware.

But, I think you may run into some issues.

I have a lot of Ignite experience, most of it from the school of hard knocks.

If you need certain files or applications off the C3600, you might be able to get away with wholesale filesystem copies.

Even with Oracle, you can sometimes get away with fs copy relink. Sometimes.

Meandering back directly to your question, you can try it by taking the Ignite tape from the old box, sticking in the new box, booting, Interupt at the 10 sec prompt

sea

Bo p#

# is the number of the boot device that comes up sequential

Don't interact with the IPL

Interupt Ignite when prompted and make appropriate changes to fs size, layout and disk configuration.

Of course the two boxes probably don't have compatible tape drives do they.

Then you'll need to build a golden image on the original box, you'll need lots of space for that. Then you might be able to boot the L class off the C box and load your image.

You'd be better off from the stability standpoint by cold installing and migrating your apps one at a time to the L3000 box. Those are nice servers, and you really don't want to migrate any issues on the C box to the L box.

Here is a link on Ignite Golden Image creation.
