Difference between PA-RISC 64 and IA64.

hi
Which is the difference between hp-ux on IA64 64 bits and hp-ux on PA-RISC 64 bits.

When do we use IA64 and when do we use PA-RISC; i mean, in which case do you have to use each or other?

The thing here is the following:
I want to install SAP NW 04 and the master installer have two options, choose IA64 or PA-RISC 64

Open the box and look at the chips.

On _what_?

Does "uname -m" say "ia64"?

(Who says that there's no such thing as a
stupid question?)

the result is:
9000/899

do 9000 servers refer to PA-RISC? right?

Two completely different cpu platforms.

IA is Itanium

PA-RISC is... PA-RISC

Right. I believe that all IA64 systems say
"ia64", but PA-RISC systems return different
model numbers.

Maybe you should try the model command. If it returns "rxNNNN", then you're dealing with IA. If it returns "rpNNNN", then you're dealing with PA.

thanks to all ...

one more question...

is there any place into the system where is configured the word "PA-RISC" for the following model server?

$ uname -m
9000/899
$ model
9000/899/K570

Thanks in advance.

Re: Difference between PA-RISC 64 and IA64.

k-class boxes are all pa-risc. They can be either 32 or 64 bit, depending on O.S.

use "getconf KERNEL_BITS" to see if its 32 or 64 bit OS

Re: Difference between PA-RISC 64 and IA64.

Originally, HP-UX ran only on PA-RISC
processors, so there was no need to identify
the architecture as "PA-RISC", but the model
could be useful. Now that it runs on two
different processor types, the architecture
becomes more interesting.

True, but hardly exhaustive:

dy # uname -m
9000/785
dy # model
9000/785/C3700

Yes and no.

Re: Difference between PA-RISC 64 and IA64.

well Integrity servers are listed as ia64 models, and the PARISC usd to be labelled as 9000/xxxx

Another place to look is to see if you have a file called /usr/sam/lib/mo/sched.models

This lists the various PARISC models, and is on HP-UX up to 11.23 at least.
example:

K370 2.0 PA8200
K380 2.0 PA8200
K400 1.1d PA7200
K410 1.1d PA7200
K420 1.1d PA7200
K450 2.0 PA8000
K460 2.0 PA8000
K460-EG 2.0 PA8000
K460-XP 2.0 PA8000
K470 2.0 PA8200
K570 2.0 PA8200
K580 2.0 PA8200
L1000-36 2.0 PA8500
L1000-44 2.0 PA8500
L1000-5X 2.0 PA8600
L1000-8X 2.0 PA8700
L1500-6x 2.0 PA8700

Re: Difference between PA-RISC 64 and IA64.

In the past the very early computers were already 9xxx machines.

Later the PA-RISC server and workstation systems were named 9000/800 and 9000/700.

Current PA-RISC servers are still members of the HP-9000 family, but named rpxxxx ("r" for "racked", "p" for "PA-RISC").

The difference is the CPU architecture, so the OS needs to use different binaries.
"Old" PA-RISC binaries can be emulated on the new Integrity machines, but not vice versa.
Optimized binaries for Itanium will give you optimal performance on Integrity servers.

Hope this helps!

It would seem this could be better. It shouldn't ask you, it should know the answer. Or at least suggest the correct default.
