Hi Phil,

Not shure if there is a doc that will compare 11.0 versus 11i v2. Below you can find a link to the latest release notes.

Re: differences and new features of 11.23

Hi Phil,

After studying & playing with 11.23 PA-RISC, for a while, I see the main diffs as:
1) More dynamic kernel parms - the best being the max?siz & shm??? parms
2) Newly intoduced "auto-tuning" kernel parms - These 2 features alone will cut down reboots due to kernel tuning dramatically.
3) Vastly different kernel handling procedures - The way the kernel is handled is quite different. Now the kernel is not necessarily relinked *every* time a change is made. And you can have as many "different" kernel versions as /stand will hold - not *just* two.
4) And finally the system seems to be noticeably a bit tighter & faster than 11.11

I'm still checking it out so I may find more later.

Cheers,
Jeff

Re: differences and new features of 11.23

One other key feature is that with the latest release of 11.23, both PA-Risc and Itanium machines can now run the same release of the Operating System.

This is very important for some shops that like to minimize their support costs by getting their machines all synced up from an OS point of view.

Re: differences and new features of 11.23

11i v1 introduced dynamic kernel parameters. 11i v2 expanded on this concept. Right now 11i v2 is a 64 bit only release. If the hardware does not support 32 bits you can't install it.

Most docs I've seen show the differences between 11i v1 and v2.

One important feature. 11.00 is approaching end of life. The time is now to plan upgrades, migrations and required hardware replacement.

Another important issue is application vendor support. That is still not wide on the PA-RISC side, though its improving every day.

Re: differences and new features of 11.23

Hi Oz,

While that is true I would cautions people to understand that binaries are still system specific & should be recognized as vastly different. In other words IF you try to run Oracle for PA-RISC on Itanium, you need to know that it will run - but like a tired dog. You *need* to run the Itanium version on Itanium & the PA-RISC version on PA-RISC.
Bottom line is the Aries emulation will hamstring PA-RISC code on an Itanium.
Even though the "same" version of HP-UX will run on each system - *even* the kernel itself is different.
Why else do you think it takes a DVD to hold it?

My 2 cents,
