Dir List Denied trying to access forums via NS4.75 on 11i

Given:
HP 9000 C110 Workstation (512MB RAM)
HP-UX 11i
Netscape 4.75 (HP-supplied)

I try to access http://forums.itrc.hp.com/

I get redirected to http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/
(expected)

Instead of getting the top forums page, I get the error:

Directory Listing Denied
This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed.

Can anyone duplicate this error with Netscape on HP-UX? Am I the only one who sees the irony in "all HP stuff" not being able to get through to the HP forums?

I had to switch to my Winblows machine with Idiot Exploiter to post this message . . . . .

Re: Dir List Denied trying to access forums via NS4.75 on 11i

Jim,

I don't know if I have seen that on my Unix box, exact same config as yours by the way, I think I might have. I can't be sure.

I HAVE seen that, just a minute or two ago in fact, on my Windows ME machine running Netscape 4.78 at home. This isn't the first time. I had the problem last night as well.

I don't know if they are related or not, but before I saw the error I could not get logged into the Forums. A box would pop up saying "The document contained no data" and I'd have to click OK. I was able to get logged into the forums and browse by bringing up IE 5.5. It has worked so far.

By the way, IE is available for HP-UX. Go to MS and find their download area and select IE and HP-UX and it should come up.

there were problems today that caused various issues, and that was one of them that I also experienced. At the time of replying, it was working again for me.

Re: Dir List Denied trying to access forums via NS4.75 on 11i

Pat,
I knew IE was available for HP-UX, I'm just not willing to poison a perfectly fine UNIX system with anything from Microsloth. I'd still like a copy of the employment ads from the Redmond paper when Micro$oft was shopping for UNIX programmers. At least they had the sense to ditch their PoS TCP/IP stack and lift the one from FreeBSD -- but I digress.

Melvyn,
I'm still getting the same error this morning with NS4.75 on 11i.

This simply highlights many people's complaints about the ITRC being molassas lethargic, javascript bloated, and downright unfriendly to non-Winblows non-IE users. I have spoken to a half-dozen folks from ITRC so far, and I've been told that many good changes are in the works. I hope they see the light of day soon.

Re: Dir List Denied trying to access forums via NS4.75 on 11i

Jim,

I brought up Netscape this morning on my C200, 11i machine and while I am not getting the errors you are, I am getting multiple SSI errors when trying to go to the HP-UX family page.

I am doing this reply from IE 5 on the same box and it has worked fine (as any MS product can) this morning.

The only reason I am running IE on this box is because IE has become our new corporate "Standard".

Re: Dir List Denied trying to access forums via NS4.75 on 11i

Pat,

Yeah, IE is our corp standard here as well. I guess I'm just being difficult. And yes, M$ products *can* work correctly, but they often do not.

2/3 of my desktops thankfully are not M$ (HP-UX, Linux, and WinNT via KVM switch). If I could have gotten Visio for Linux or HP-UX (no chance of that now), I would have dropped WinNT entirely.

Back on-topic, though, the ITRC pages should operate correctly regardless of browser (NS, IE, Opera, Konqueror, etc.). Make the ITRC work (and make it usable) with Lynx -- then I'll be *really* impressed ;-)

Curiously, NS4.76 on RH7.1 can access the forums without a problem even when NS4.75 on HPUX11i cannot. Figure me that one.

10 days until Chicago. I need a beer.

Cheers,
Jim

Re: Dir List Denied trying to access forums via NS4.75 on 11i

Jim,

I agree with you that the Forums definitely need to be browser INDEPENDENT! I despise web sites that are designed specifically for IE. I've been useing Netscape since its version 3 days and I have always liked it better than IE.

My comment about MS stuff didn't quite come out right. What I meant to say was that IE on HP-UX was working as well as any other MS product. Even though it's on Unix it's still MS.

Re: Dir List Denied trying to access forums via NS4.75 on 11i

Pat,

I understand what you're saying now. Sadly for all of us, though, using IE on HP-UX is akin to hooking Radio Shack speakers up to your nice Kenwood receiver and then trying to enjoy Stevie Ray Vaughan at decent volume levels. As an old friend of mine used to say, "That just ain't right."

My RASE just told me that Mike Oravec (ITRC) should be giving me a call. It's looking more and more like something might be pooched with my install of NS or 11i, as nobody else has yet been able to exactly duplicate what I'm experiencing. I'll post updates.

Cheers,
Jim

I get a script error with netscape on a v2250 with ns-navgold !

Microsoft ship IE now for hp-ux.. there's no question it's a better browser.. windows or hp-ux.

Netscape lost it when they went to 4.7.. let's face it.

I need to elaborate my sure to upset comment..
Netscape can't handle XML, has resize problems, can't full screen, doesn't work/no support with most hp-ux web based utilities: san manager, service control manager, mcsg manager, parmgr, veritas storage admin, opencall... the list goes on.....

Re: Dir List Denied trying to access forums via NS4.75 on 11i

Bill,

I hear what you're saying, and I have to agree with some points. Still, it makes me sad. Apparently too many developers have bought in to the "Windows is the answer, now what was the question?" lie.

I guess having universally compatible code for all browsers is a quickly dying idea. I mourn the loss of choice. Competition and choice is why we have the quality products we have today. Take GM, Ford, and Chrysler for example. Everybody being forced to just Idiot Exploiter is akin to being forced to buy a Chevy because strangely it's the only vehicle that runs well on all the roads you drive and takes you to the stores and restaurants you want -- even though you like Ford better and the Ford best suits your needs otherwise.

Cheers,
Jim
