Disk failure????

When I try to boot my E55 (running 11.0), the system will not come up. I get an error that I/O hardware probe timed out (with the device path).....Dumpsys failed....not possible for kernel to find a process that caused this crash.....and it tries to loop throught the boot process again (in a never ending circle).
I tried booting off a cd and got to the ISL promp. But now I am not sure what to do from here. I don't know if the disk needs to be replaced or if I can run fsck to fix it. But I can't even get to a place to run fsck.....

Re: Disk failure????

I think, your boot area is corrupted. Do you have any ignite backup? If it is there try to recover the system from there.

Re: Disk failure????

Hi Kathleen,

To boot the system in single user mode, boot the primary disk (bo pri) and select "y" to interact with ipl. At the ipl prompt type "hpux -is (;0)/stand/vmunix"

to boot the system in multiuser mode "hpux (;0)/stand/vmunix"

to boot the system without quorum (mirror disk faulty),

hpux -lq (;0)/stand/vmunix

A I/O probe timeout could be a terminator issue. Check your cables and termnators.

Hope this helps.

Re: Disk failure????

I would do the following:

1) Boot system and interrupt it.
2) Check the PIM information ( from boot console menu, information)
3) Check and make sure that there is no hardware errors reported.
4) boot from the primary disk.
5) Interact with ISL and give 'hpux -is' ( for single-user OR 'hpux -lm' for LVM maintenance mode.
6) Once booted, check all file systems and hardware with stm
Life is a promise, fulfill it!

Re: Disk failure????

If you got "probe timed out" error, it can be any one of these ..
1) Disk is damaged/bad
2) SCSI termination problem
3) Unsupported hardware on the same bus as the root disk.
Have you try cycle power the whole system, before you do that check all your cable connection and termination to make sure nothing is loose. If you have any "suspected" device which is bad and connected to the same bus as the root disk, disconnect it.

Re: Disk failure????

Hi Kathleen,

Try this link on how to use the recovery CD,

Hope this helps.

Re: Disk failure????

Hi,

Interrupt the boot procees and from the ISL prompt first find out your bootable devices. Whether the boot path is correct or not. Give a sea command. If your boot harddisk is getting sensed then you can proceed. Or else you will have to check out for loose connections and terminations. The try booting in single user mode. If the root harddisk is getting sensed then you can do something. If the roor harddisk itseld has failed then you would have to replace and reload the OS. If the harddisk loads the kernel and it stops in between then try booting thro an alternate kernel copy.

Or else boot thro the recovery CD ( Core Media CD ) and try to run a recovery shell.

Re: Disk failure????

This seems to be hardware problem. I had expreienced it with N Class server. It goes in loop but does not boot. At last we found, it was CPU problem, 1 CPU had gone bad. After we disabled it, system boot up regulalry. But, when we changed CPU, found, its not only CPU, but had CPU slot error, required us to change the system board also. Call HP & let them check Hardware.
