disk mirror info

I am a rookie system administrator of an rp3410 which is currently running B11.11. System has all LVols mirrored. I would like to update the OS to 11i v2. In reading the update manual, it appears I should increase the size of certain LVols. I am looking for information regarding what I need to do regarding the mirroring, Do I turn it off(?) first before increasing the size of LVols, If so how do I go about this. Help for this 'less than confident mind' regarding this project would be greatly appreciated!

Re: disk mirror info

No need to turn off.

Do your LV increase like you normally would. The MirrorUX will pick up on it an do the mirror automagically.

Re: disk mirror info

I suggest you break the mirror and use the mirror disks for the upgrade. i.e. install 11v2 on the mirror disks. In case it didn't work, go back to the original disks.

Re: disk mirror info

I'm going with Wilfred on this one. Split up your mirror - upgrade on one set. In the end, after the upgrade is successful mirror the drives onto the backups you held in reserve. This will allow you to go back to the previous OS easily. Also, make sure you have ignite backups before you begin. I also like having dd (data dumps) to tape handy as well, b/c you can then just boot off the old set, and restore from tape back to the original disks very easily and completely. Please make sure that your alternate boot paths are actually working before you begin!!!

Re: disk mirror info

Best way to resize - use ignite.

We have started down the 11iv2 path - have 4 systems now running on it - fresh install on all of them - then restored data...so I can't give you any experience as far as upgrading...

Best would be to split mirror...make sure you have a make_tape_recovery tape first!

Re: disk mirror info

Kellee,

What lvols do you need to enlarge? Bear in mind that /, /stand and swap need to be contiguous and if any of these need to be enlarged, the only feasible way to do this would be via an Ignite make_tape_recovery backup/restore.

Re: disk mirror info

I'm not certain of the path/ease of upgrading but I'm a fan of fresh installs. I would ignite your current server, reduce your mirrors, remove those devices from your current vg00. Fresh install v2 on those devices where you can now size the lv's to at "least" required minimums, but don't be stingy with the space.

Once done, you can import the old vg00 to something like vg00_v1 and move over any customized files like passwd, group, fstab...

You now have a fresh 11iv2 plus a viable fallback that requires nothing more than a boot off that v1 device. Once things are stable, remirror.

caveat: you will be without mirroring for a period of time unless you have more than 1 mirror copy

Re: disk mirror info

Hi,

You definitely need good amount of space in /usr filesystem (if it is a seperate filesystem, else / filesystem should be large enough).

My suggestion is to split the mirror and perform upgrade on one of the mirrors...

Also in case you do not have a seperate /usr fs, and you need to increase the size of root filesystem, keep in mind that it must be contiguous, and that would require freeing up some space from the next physical extent (next to the last physical extent root fs is using).
