Disk on HP D-Class servers

Hi Guys, Can you pl. let me know the type of Hard Disk required on the HP D-Class servers?

Most of the internal disks used in the D-class servers are fast-wide high-voltage differential. These drives were very popular a few years ago because they could use very long SCSI cables. However, they are electrically incompatible with *ALL* other SCSI standards (an adapter cable cannot work). The internal drives are hot-swappable and were only sold as an integrated package. But these disks have been obsolete for many years so the only disks you can add to an D-class server must be external single-ended disks connected to the single-ended interface in the D-class. Note that many D-class servers are being replaced and you may find used systems for very little money. The small (2Gb, 4Gb and 9Gb) hot swappable FastWide HV Differential disks are still in high demand so used disks may be more expensive than the D-class server.

SCSI-2 defines the protocol but the voltages define the compatibility. Here is a good reference for SCSI-2: http://www.t10.org/scsi-3.htm and for a quick guide to HV-FWD: http://www.cablemakers.com/hvd.htm

Now your D-class may have a SCSI-2 SE (single-ended) interface card where you can hook additional disks. Note that trying to hookup brand new disks to an old server may be electrically compatible but your version of HP-UX may not support the much larger disks (72Gb and larger).
