DLT Tape drive getting hardware error

Hi,

I am trying to use the mc command to display the drives and the tapes and I am getting the following error:

ERROR: 0x4 Hardware Error : 0x4080 DDS: Diagnostic Failure. DLT: ROM EDC failure

This is a HP SureStore E tape Library and I am using as a Netbackup library. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: DLT Tape drive getting hardware error

Hi Sonny,

Try this,

# mc ???p /dev/rac/c4t0d0 -q
output: vendor ID, product ID, firmware

Information on slots and devices:
# mc ???p /dev/rac/c4t0d0 -e DS
output: NUM_DT_ELEMENTS, NUM_ST_ELEMENTS

Statistics of all slots and drives:
# mc ???p /dev/rac/c4t0d0 -r DS
output: NUM_ST_ELEMENTS

Moving of media:
# mc ???p /dev/rac/c4t0d0 -s -d

Example:
# mc ???p /dev/rac/c4t0d0 ???s D1 ???d S3
loads the tape from drive 1 to slot 3

# mc ???p /dev/rac/c4t0d0 ???s D1 ???d S4 ???s S1 ???d D1
loads the tape from drive 1 to slot 4 and another tape from slot 1 to drive 4

# mc ???p /dev/rac/c4t0d0 ???s S1 ???d D1
loads the tape from Slot 1 to Drive 1

Hope this helps.

Re: DLT Tape drive getting hardware error

Sanjay,

When I use any of the mc command, all of them returned the "Hardware Error" message.

Re: DLT Tape drive getting hardware error

Sanjay,

I powered off and powered on the tape library and the hardware error went away, however, when I try to move a tape into drive one, the hardware erro came back. It seems to be a problem with the first drive., because when it was
doing a self test it had an error.
. So I think it is a hardware error and I will call it in to HP support. Thanks for your help.

Re: DLT Tape drive getting hardware error

Hi Sonny,

you have two drives in the library. If only one of them is giving problem you can try the mc command with the other drive (refer to it as D2) and see if the mc command works. If both the drive gives an error during self test, you can do any further testing only after replacing the drive. The library normally has some self test and exercise mech options under test. Refer to the library user manual for more details.

Hope this helps.

Re: DLT Tape drive getting hardware error

Hi,

One thought comes to mind. Have you set up a
device to drive the robot? If not have a
look at the attached document on how. It
is used to move tapes around your tape
library, door, drive slot.

Re: DLT Tape drive getting hardware error

The problem with the tape drive is a hardware problem, I have called HP and it will be replaced. Thanks for everybody's help.
