Do these messages coincide with the backup windows? In a SAN environment, especially for arbitrated loops which your tape devices are on, the backup software must be able to lock the tape device. If it doesn't, if another system probes the device it it will reset it and cause the tape to rewind causing the backup to fail. Also, if there are LIPs on the loop this can have the same effect.

in addition to all replies I propose you to check drive's firmware. Use HP Library and Tape Tools for HP-UX available at http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg50128.html or Support Tools Manager - find .frm file at www.hp.com
