DNS Config question

Hi,
I have two zones setup here - company.ie and company.com - the former is a primary and the latter is slaved from a remote DNS server.
When I run the command "nslookup remoteserver" from the unix prompt it correctly resolves the name in the company.com zone. It does this through the resolv.conf 'search' directive which tells it to look in 'company.ie' first and if that fails to then look in 'company.com'. That works fine for my Unix clients.
However, on the NT platform (using the same nameserver) it can't find 'remoteserver' because it only looks in company.ie. I have worked out how to change this in NT so it behaves the same as my Unix client but I'm wondering if this is something I'm going to have to configure for each of my clients (via DHCP or whatever) ?
Is there any way I can configure my nameserver to always look in company.ie and company.com or does each client have to instruct it to do this ?
TIA
Richard.

Re: DNS Config question

resolv.conf on the Unix host controls the way the Unix resolver works when it's acting as a client to DNS. The Wintel machines have a similar feature:
Start->Settings->Control Panel

Network->TCP/IP->Properties

DNS Configuration

Domain Suffix Search Order

I either case, these configurations say in effect add "blah1" to any unqualified names and look up the domain as a fully qualified name. If you don't find the name, add "blah2" to any unquailfied names and look up the domain as a fully qualified name.

You'll need to set this via DHCP, since the configuration of the ressolver is a client side behavior.

Re: DNS Config question

So the answer "YES" then ? - this needs to be configured in each of the different types of client - there's no way of doing a once-off config change on the DNS server which would hold for all resolvers ?

Re: DNS Config question

Hi
1. If you have static IP on NT client, you have to change manually on all client.
2. If you are using DHCP then you have to change on server only.

Our company has both static and DHCP client so whenever we change anything. we do manuall change on all static client.
