DNS master in subdomain
For the sake of this discussion the following items apply:
Company uses actual internal 10.x.x.x network
10.3.8.0 255.255.252.0 is reserved subdomain for home office servers.
10.3.36.0 255.255.254 is reserved subdomain for test.company.com
10.3.30.0 255.255.252.0 is reserved subdomain for production.company.com
10.3.100.0 255.255.254.0 is reserved subdomain for sales.
compass1.servers.company.com 10.3.8.101 is master DNS server for servers.company.com subdomain.
Company would like to make compass1 the master DNS server for the entire company, i.e. it would serve all of company.com not just server.company.com.
It would delegate subdomains production.company.com, sales.company.com, and test.company.com to other servers in those subdomains. It would also delegate to itself servers.company.com.
Question: How can this be done?
Would compass1 have to have another IP address with a name in company.com domain?
Could it use the same address it has now, but assign two names to it, one from company.com domain and another from servers.company.com subdomain?
Can a server in a subdomain act as the primary DNS server?

Computers are just external storage for my brain.

Re: DNS master in subdomain
I think you can try your idea.
I'm not certain it will work. If you test it, you may run into issues.
I avoid this by making every dns server the "master" server and replicating the data in /var/named
You might be able to also accomplish your goal with some artful data changes in the zone files.
To be more specific, I'd need to see what the zone records in named.conf say for the three subdomains listed above.
