DNS Secondary on Unix from NT primary DNS

I saw the message on May 30 related to what I am asking. I guess I am looking for help on just the last part that Albert said he could help with.

I have multiple Unix collectors at various sites that rely on NT DNS secondary servers. I want to make each of the NNM Collection stations a secondary DNS server itself for their respective divisions or subnets that only NNM will use. Is it just copying a couple of files from the primary NT DNS box ro is there some sort of how-to or instructions for this?

I really need to get away from resolving DNS straight from NT, because it is causing large amounts of time whenever I bring up the alarm browser. Unless there is some way to help out the DNS on NT. It looks like either the Wins resolution that is also done on the NT DNS boxes or broadcast may be causing me the large amounts of time. Over time each of my NNM collection stations get slower bringing up the alarm browser until it is a problem now. I guess more alarms means slower, but I can't accept a couple of hours like now. If I remove DNS from the resolv.conf, bingo a quick alarm browser comes up.

If anyone could help me with the steps I need to take in getting my Unix boxes set up as secondary DNS machines thanks.

Jason, I attached a document that explains about primary, secondary and cache only DNS servers and how to set them up, but it is for BIND 4.9.7. Don't know if this will help or not.

Jason,

I'd be glad to assist!

The first thing that you'll need is a /etc/named.boot file which outlines the Domains to Cache, and where to get them.

Berlene's document is a great first start.

After you get a rough cut, I be happy to review it.
