documentation about swap (not)removal

Hello,

today, i had a problem with a swap partition, i have needed to reboot the server for remove it.

a sun solaris colleague have showed me the "swap -d" command in his solaris system, with that command, the swap space (in use or not) can be removed without the need of restart.

i'd like to understand why, on hp-ux, it's impossible to remove a swap space without restart the system, do you have technical documentations about this?

Regards,
Cedrick Gaillard.

Re: documentation about swap (not)removal

Hi Cedrick:

In order to remove swap, a reboot is required. Once activated, the kernel considers the device (or filesystem) in use. "Deactivation" is the state of not having been activated in the first place.

Re: documentation about swap (not)removal

Thanks James

but my question is why is it not possible to deactivate a swap ?
is it a design problem ?
is it a security problem ?

other systems (solaris) can do it, why hp-ux can't ?
i ask for it because when i have said to my solaris colleague "i must reboot the server for remove the swap", he thought that this was a joke.

Re: documentation about swap (not)removal

You're not going to find any such documentation, and I don't think discussing this issue on a public forum is appropriate or productive. (It would inevitably stray into either design discussions that aren't appropriate outside of HP proper, or pointless dwelling on resource/focus choices in the past.)

I think it is safe to say that folks are aware of the limitation and the state of other unix environments. If and how it is mitigated or resolved will be seen.
