Another possibility: Provide an e-mail
address, and hope that someone will make a
private offer. There may be someone out
there who would be willing to help, but who
does not wish to advertise a potential
copyright violation on a Web forum which is
operated by the copyright owner.

Many things are possible.

I remember when HP was willing to send anyone
10.20 on a CD-ROM, just hoping to avoid Y2k
problems. Those were the days. (I probably
should have pocketed that CD when I had the
chance. Safe bet that it's in a landfill,
now.)

I suggest rebooting the customer's machine from some alternate boot media (no I don't have a suggestion as to what, perhaps some version of Linux) and then use the dd command to create a complete image of the existing system. Set the output to an external disk drive. Move the external disk over to your lab system and use dd to restore the image. It will be an exact copy, sector for sector.
