dropped gateway

OK, I was just wondering if anyone has experienced this bug. I have an N4000 running 11.0 and PeopleSoft. I use two interface cards. One 10/100 card and another 4port 10/100 card as a secondary interface for an application server running in this Nclass. Well I changed the ip address of the secondary IP address (through Sam)and when I finished, the 'route_gateway' address was wiped out, blank. No users could connect until I re-assigned a Route_gateway address. Ever heard of this happening before. I caught flack for making a change on a prod server during the day. Who would of thought that changing the IP address of a secondary interface would wipe out the GW address.

Re: dropped gateway

That is why I would never use SAM for anything but kernel tunning. Unpredicable results are the norm, in my experience.

I have changed gateways, IP address, netmasks etc. by editing the appropriate files with no unexpected results on prod and test servers. I would suggest that you familiarize yourself with alternate ways of changing network settings. It's simple, edit the /etc/rc.config.d/netconf file. Then /sbin/init.d/net start.
If it has wheels or a skirt, you can't afford it.

Re: dropped gateway

Sound like a bug to me, Robert. Let HP know about it. If we don't tell them, the software never gets fixed, and people just go back to their old, manual ways of doing things.

Re: dropped gateway

I've seen SAM does weird things(especially LVM stuff) but not this one. I agree with Pete that you should report this to HP.

Re: dropped gateway

Well if I do i manually, and I have to stop and start net, wont there be an interruption in service anyway?

Re: dropped gateway

Check the netconf file to make sure that SAM didn't add another route entry that will cause problems when you reboot.

Re: dropped gateway

Ahh...but you don't have to do a net stop/start to make the changes take effect. Yes, you can make the changes to /etc/rc.config.d/netconf so they will take effect whenever you reboot next, BUT to just change the IP addy on a card you can just use ifconfig. See 'man ifconfig' for more info.

Re: dropped gateway

Sam has never been very good with changing IP addresses.

I once changed the IP address on a D class server's primary card and it added an entry to /etc/hosts and totally screwed up my networking.

Its better to use ifconfig for the change, if its temporary, because it gives you the ability to see your results and make them come out the way you want.

For permanent changes, make careful changes to /etc/rc.config.d/netconf ,taking care to make a backup before you start to say /root/ don't make a /etc/rc.config.d/netconf.back that will really mess up your next boot.
