DST questions - link to a FAQ?

Hi,

There are new threads opened daily on the HP-UX side about the start of Daylight Saving Time changing in March and the patches required for HP-UX and Java.

I was just curious if it would be worthwhile to put together a FAQ via a link that might explain things and help head off the same questions being asked each day?

It's just an suggestion. I know y'all don't have enough to work on already. :)

Re: DST questions - link to a FAQ?

Hi John:

I think the fundamental problem is laziness. Performing a Google search within this site should yield ample references to answer the questions asked. Simply understanding how to search the Patch Database might head off some of the same questions, too.

I agree with your suggestion insofar as some individuals might prefer HP-branded document that they can wave at their management --- an officially sanctioned epistle, if you please.

Of course, any document like that still assumes that the poster first *look* for it. I'd bet that it would still be easier to ask *where* to look, and hence the posts would degenerate into "Where can I find...?"

As the old adage goes, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink."

Didn't this originally get posted in the "your questions regarding ITRC forums" section? How did it end up here with exactly the same time stamp?

Re: DST questions - link to a FAQ?

I would welcome the idea.

There is still information that is not readily available in some of the documents - at least not until the last week.

Example - the DCE patch was not announced until last week. And this patch is not scheduled to available until Feb.

I have seen, and received, responses that the tzupdater tool will work on java 1.3. That announcement from HP was not until last week as well - and again not available until Feb.

For these reasons (and more) I think the FAQ would be a good idea.

My feeling is that the vendors (HP, SUN, IBM, etc,) are not regarding this issue as a high risk issue - which very well may be correct. But some of us folks (like me) are under the gun from management to find out all we can and to have this information ready to present 'yesterday'.

Having something that can we can referr to, or find answers with, will deflect some of the management pressures.

Yes, he did post it there. The moderator moved it to HP-UX. You can see the "question moved" notation in the subject link in that family. :-))

Makes perfect sense now.
