DTSESSION:pamauthenticate status=9

Hi
I have received the messeges below in my syslog.log file.

Jul 22 12:34:31 finess_t DTSESSION: pamauthenticate status=9
Jul 22 12:35:03 finess_t DTSESSION: pamauthenticate status=9

Does this mean there is a problem with my computer? If so, please let me know the problem.

Also please tell me what exactly must have happened for the messege to be displayed in syslog.log file.

My OS is HP-UX 11i, Server rp7400 two node cluster, 4 gb ram, with oracle 9i

Thanks in advance

Re: DTSESSION:pamauthenticate status=9

Looks to me like a DTSession has started on host finess_t and it has done some pam authentication.

DTSession is CDE or X windows I believe.

PAM is plugable authentication module or something like that.

Syslog can log all sorts of things depending on how the programmers have decided to use it. Just because there is an entry doesn't mean there is necessarily a big problem.

man dtlogin might give you a bit more of an idea.

Hi,

This message corresponds to illegal password attempts to X-term sessions to your host with name finess.

You can test this by locking graphical display & then putting wrong password 2-3 entries. It surely will generate these entires in syslog.log
