Re: E-Tape Library Installation
Although the documents that have been
given to you will help, they do not
give the latest information.
If your using FC you will need A5158A
version B.11.00.06 at the minimum, but
8 is later. Patches PHKL_23939, PHKL_24027
PHKL_25210, PHSS_23996 and PHSS_23440

Re: E-Tape Library Installation
There are a few things you need to be
able to do. 'tar' will work as long as
you don't need to write to a second
tape. Have you considered using the
'fbackup' tools, the throughput is much
faster and will actually fit more onto
your tape(s). What about OmniBack?
You will need to use another command
called 'mc' to move tapes in and out of
the tape drives.
You can get the tape devices from the
output of 'ioscan -fnkC tape'
You can run backups from different servers
as long as the tapes are loaded into
their respective drives by the system
controlling the robotics.
You will need to set up the robotics for
your tape library unit. Attached is a
white paper on how to do this. Before
you start ensure that the following
drivers are installed in your kernel.
These should be schgr for the robotics,
(depending on the model) stape for the
tape drives and spt and sctl. Refer to
the white paper for further information.
If you cannot get it to work post the
output of 'ioscan -fn' so I can help
you further.
You can create a new kernel using the
instructions in the white paper or in
SAM, you choose.
sam --> kernel configuration --> drivers
select the driver, from the pull-down
menu select actions --> add driver to
kernel. Continue for each one, then
actions --> process new kernel.
Be aware of the warnings in the white
paper about patches being loaded.
Make sure that you only control the robotics
of the library from one server only or you will
have many problems, I cannot stress this
point too much

Re: E-Tape Library Installation
There is one further document I'm attaching that will help you and that is a script that will assist you in moving tapes around. The script uses the 'mc' (media changer). Have a look at the man page for it as well.

Re: E-Tape Library Installation
I am not able to open the Attachment. One I read it was Installation Guide. We have configured the 4/40 Sure Store Library. We can see the 4 nos of Device files and also in the SAM also. But I am not able to take backup. Error 'Can not open device'
Please suggust me what I have to do. And How I can take Omni Backup on this library.
My Questions are
I have 4 device files. Means I have 4 nos of tape drive inside the Unit. Each tape heaving 200 GB storage capacity. suppose I am taking a backup of 150 GB on one tape. What happend to the next 50 GB ? and if I am taking more tha 200 GB bakcup. Who will change the tape. How I will come to know Which is the first tape and Which is the 2nd tape.
How to maintain the Barcode Database. How to Identify which file is located on which tape.
Sorry for the rubbish questions.
With Warm Regards

Re: E-Tape Library Installation
If you are attempting to write 200Gb to a
tape you will most likely find that there
will not be the capacity to do this on a
single tape, even providing for an exceptional
amount of compression. You choices are now
more limited to using a product called
omniback, legato and a few others.
Reasons you should need to purchase a product
such as OmniBack:
Barcode support
Automatic changing of tapes.
Full database of tapes and catalog of what is
on what tape. OmniBack is not a free and must
be purchased. You will need the minimum
number of licenses versus the number of
concurrent drives you will be using at
any one time. You can install the product which
comes with a 60? day trial license. This can be
installed from CD's that have the product if
you have it, or contact HP.
The manuals can be downloaded or referenced from
here:
http://ovweb.external.hp.com/lpe/doc_serv/
This should be enough to get you started.
