EMS Monitor Restart Notification

I'm new to the EMS system and I understand that I can disable the EMS monitoring events through the "disabled_instances" file. But, my question is do I really want to disable the notification? I'm getting the following irritating messages for different devices upon reboot of my servers every morning and would like to stop the emails...any suggestions would be a big help!

The emails are like:
Date: Sun, 21 Jul 2002 22:03:33 -0500 (CDT)
To: root
Subject: satxfs: Event Monitor Restart Notification
Status: RO

>------------ Event Monitoring Service Event Notification ------------<

Notification Time: Sun Jul 21 22:03:33 2002

satxfs sent Event Monitor Restart information:

Title: dm_memory
Command: /usr/sbin/stm/uut/bin/tools/monitor/dm_memory
Vendor: Hewlett-Packard Company
Version: B.01.00
Monitor PID: 942

Resources currently monitored:
/system/events/memory/49

>---------- End Event Monitoring Service Event Notification ----------<

If I disable using the disabled_instances, have I just invalidated the use of EMS, or am I notified by some other means? ...Thanks!

Re: EMS Monitor Restart Notification

Hello,

When using the disabled_instances file, you are in effect turning off monitoring for any of the hardware paths you specify. You would be in effect turning off EMS for those devices.

The restart notification you get is automatic and the result of the daemons being started.

Hope this helps

Re: EMS Monitor Restart Notification

No you don't want to do that. In some cases where EMS logs are filling up /var/opt/resmon/log/event.log too quickly you may want to disable certain "instances" temporary until you find out what is causing that. Usually all it needs is the latest OnlineDiag/STM patch and relates EMS patches. In your case however if it's a "one-time" deal i.e only upon reboot then it's normal. You may want to check the resmon logfile to make sure you're not getting repetitive event notification. I know this is out of the scope but may I ask why do you need to reboot your servers every morning ?

I thought you may find this useful .. "EMS White Paper", definately a good read.

Re: EMS Monitor Restart Notification

I figured I didn't want to go as far as disabling the monitor wholesale, but the emails get a bit too much. I understand the reboots may be clearly overkill, but with poor applications and middleware, some processes just won't clear after a few days and the reboots help. I guess my original question on getting rid of the EMS Event Notification emails is a no-go if I want to maintain the EMS monitoring and notification IF there is a critical or serious event to appear, correct?

Re: EMS Monitor Restart Notification

An option for you may be just change the email notification to log to a file. But the issue here is you would want to be notified by email if a real hardware problem is detected by EMS vs having it logged to a file unless you maintain the discipline to view the log file everyday. Anyway it's an option for you to consider .. take a look at this process..
