Erasing Sensitive Data

Hi everyone,
Does anyone have a quick script that will erase all data from a disk. The data is sensitive so the script would have to remove all traces from the disk, possibly rewriting the disk with bogus data.

Thanks in advance,
Tommy

mknod /dev/zero c 3 4 /dev/zero
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rdsk/(somedisk) bs=1024

Magnets do wonders but if you're looking for a slightly more sane method, there's lots of food for thought here:

Hi Tommy:

You ought to read this discussion here:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x24b53a7b3682d611abdb0090277a778c,00.html

If you are running 11.11 you have '/dev/zero'. For 10.20 or 11.0, do this to create it, first:

# mknod /dev/zero c 3 0x000003 #...on 10.20
# mknod /dev/zero c 3 0x000004 #...on 11.x

Regards!

Re: Erasing Sensitive Data

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rdsk/cXtYdZ bs=64k

followed by

tr '\000' '\377' < /dev/zero | dd bs=64k of=/dev/rdsk/cXtYdZ

Repeat the above as many times as you like. The first will write all 0's the latter will write all 1's.

Plan B. Smack disk gently with a big hammer. Repeat as needed.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.
