errors in syslog

Hello every one,

At one of out sites I saw the below error messages in /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log in both of the servers in a 2 node cluster.
May 21 01:02:12 adhp1 bootpd[16317]: Exiting after 500 minutes of
inactivity
May 21 05:45:06 adhp1 bootpd[1486]: bootpd 2.4 #1.17.213.3: Tue Jun 27
12:59:49
GMT 2000
May 21 05:45:06 adhp1 bootpd[1486]: reading "/etc/bootptab"
May 21 05:45:06 adhp1 bootpd[1486]: read 5 entries from "/etc/bootptab"
May 22 00:56:14 adhp1 bootpd[1486]: Exiting after 500 minutes of inactivity
May 22 07:05:50 adhp1 bootpd[14812]: bootpd 2.4 #1.17.213.3: Tue Jun 27
12:59:4
GMT 2000
May 22 07:05:50 adhp1 bootpd[14812]: reading "/etc/bootptab"
May 22 07:05:50 adhp1 bootpd[14812]: read 5 entries from "/etc/bootptab"

The pblm is that these messages keep added in the syslog. What may be the issue? One thing that I noticed is they have many printers with JetDirect card on the network.

Thanks in advance for the answers.

Re: errors in syslog

Hi

the error message you refer to with the 500 timeout is because when the bootpd starts when a boot request arrives. If it has not received another boot request after 500 minutes, bootpd exits. The -t option can be applied to bootpd to specify another timeout period ie -t20

so your system is working to default.

Hi,

These messages are for information only, they are not errors and can safely be ignored.

Re: errors in syslog

Hi

you can set bootpd -t0 this will stop bootpd from exiting and also stop errors going to syslog.

Re: errors in syslog

Hello all,

Thanks for the answers. Looks like this message can be ignored.

John Carr: Your suggestion is also good.

Let me see what is the openion of the sysadmin at this site - whether he is ok with these messages or he wanted to get rid of them.

Vijeesh: Thanks for the response.. Angane jeevichu pokunnu.
