Errors reading in a LTO tape

I'm having trouble reading a LTO tape in a Ultrium unit. On a few (large) files i'm receiving the following errors:

frecover(2114): read error from input device (I/O error)
frecover(2114): read error from input device (I/O error)
frecover(2113): unable to resync backup media

With kind regards,
Daniel

Re: Errors reading in a LTO tape

Hi Daniel

it will help if you will give the frecover command that you are using .

it seem to me that mybe you are not using the rigth flags .

see this doc that explen the same error that you have :

The following commands are recommended to avoid redirecting output:

# frecover -xNv -f

# frecover -xNv -f

Re: Errors reading in a LTO tape

Plus, what OS release are you running?

What was the last patch bundle you installed?

Are you trying to recover to the same machine that performed the backups? If not, then is it on the same OS release??

Re: Errors reading in a LTO tape

Hi, for example, I used this command:

frecover -r -v -y -f /dev/rmt/1m

These patchbundels are installed:

Required Patch Bundle for HP-UX 11i, February 2001
Gold Applications Patches for HP-UX 11i, June 2002
Gold Base Patches for HP-UX 11i, June 2002
Hardware Enablement Patches for HP-UX 11i, June 2002

Re: Errors reading in a LTO tape

The tape is made on a hp9000 l1000 system, and I'm trying to recover it on a Keystone RP8400 server. They both have hp-ux 11.11 installed.

Re: Errors reading in a LTO tape

Hello,

You may have a cartidge problem. Try to backup on another cartidge and retry to restore with it.

If that does not work, it may be a data-streaming problem. Ultrium drives require a very usage of the SCSI bus. You say it is giving you these errors when trying to recover large files. It may be that the bus is not keeping up with the drive or vice-versa. Where is the drive connected (which HBA), and is it on its own bus (not shared with another device)? This is required for Ultrium drives.

Re: Errors reading in a LTO tape

Which blocksize (blocksperrecord) did you use when writing the tape? If that was small or the default, then I will cause the drive not to stream, causing repositioning and (severe) wear of the tape and drive.

In general: For a high-capacity, high-speed, high-cost device like LTO you should really use more suitable/capable backup software, like, for example, HP's OmniBack.

HP LTO drives are only officialy supported in combination with OmniBack et al.
