One of my backup failes with the above error. For resolving this I did :

mv /etc/lvmtab /etc/lvmtab.bak
vgscan -av

This created new lvmtab file which has lesser entries then the original one and the vgdisplay error has resolved. I donot understand what exactly it did and what was the problem. It looks like it has removed all the alternate path entries. Kindly assist with your inputs.

P.S. There were no new changes done on the system.

Inquire if any activity has been performed on the server. These messages show that disks are missing from the host while disks entries are still in VGs.

This message says device c8t1d0 is not found.
Check the status of the device with ioscan.

#ioscan -fnC disk /dev/dsk/c8t1d0

Check the /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log and see if you can find any message regarding these devices.

Hi,
Some time we need to re-construct /etc/lvmtab when the system is running production
application, vgscan will create a partial /etc/lvmtab. In this case, most of the primary paths should
be included in the /etc/lvmtab.
before running the vgscan take a backup of /etc/lvmtab then run vgscan -v

"vgscan" scans all connected luns for lvm headers, correlates them, groups them and builds the /etc/lvmtab file.

Quite handy if your lvmtab file got deleted. But there are caveats. If you found similar errors like "Could not query.. does not correspond to pv attached to this vg" etc. it can be due to many reasons.

First thing to do is to ensure all your logical volumes are accessible. If that is the case, make sure you do not have BC/CA configured or any thing is amiss there. In fact if you have any thing like that configured, vgscan may not be a good idea (These are storage level configs, but still many times they become visible to the system and can interfere with vgscan)

Remember, vgscan cannot scan disks that are not available to the system when it scans. Means if a group of luns are not available, and you do vgscan, you lose existing config for a vg if those luns belonged to that vg!

In this case it resolved the errors since it scanned all luns it saw and recreated lvmtab and now vg/lvm commands refer to the new lvmtab for any operation.

Could you please Paste output of below vgdisplay -v ..just to make sure the links are missing..
is this disks are from SAN?
Is there any mutipathing software?
