/etc/passwd

Hello,

How can I view the password of and account in /etc/passwd?
When I use vipw it displays the passward unreadable.

You CANNOT show the password in clear text.

Yes, same as passwd [user], thanks.

But is there any way to view a password of an existing user?

As said, you CANNOT view the password in clear text.

This is a "one way" encryption.

No, you cannot view a password for a user. The password is a one-time hash of what was entered when the user changed his/her password.

The root user can change any users password without knowing the previous one.

Shalom,

root can reset any user password if files is the nsswitch.conf configuration.

So you can't view it, but you can change it.
